Rotations and Electives
Training during Saint 浪花直播 University's Child Neurology Residency includes rotations in pediatric neurology (including inpatient admissions, pediatric epilepsy monitoring unit, inpatient and outpatient consultation services), required core rotations (including EEG, NCV/EMG, pediatric neuroradiology, neuropathology, and child psychiatry), and ample elective time.
SLU's program offers exceptional training across all aspects of neurology. The first year is comprised of exclusively adult rotations during which the resident learns the fundamentals of the clinical neurological examination and diagnosis, appropriate use of diagnostic techniques, and overall management of neurological disease. Clinical rotations include inpatient neurology wards, inpatient neurology consults, outpatient neurology clinics (both general neurology and subspecialty clinics in neuromuscular disorders, stroke, epilepsy, and movement disorders), and neurointensive care. Inpatient rotations in adult neurology take place at SSM Health Saint 浪花直播 University Hospital.
During the second and third years of the child neurology program, residents study clinical child neurology in the ambulatory and inpatient settings. The ambulatory program provides the resident an opportunity to rotate through clinics in general child neurology, neurofibromatosis, tuberous sclerosis, epilepsy, neonatology, concussion, headache, cerebral palsy and neuromuscular disorders. The final 12 months are spent in the study of neuropathology, neuroradiology, clinical neurophysiology or clinical research. While on the ward rotation, the resident makes daily rounds with the attending child neurologist, and attends all regularly scheduled Department of Neurology conferences.
Each resident must participate in a faculty-sponsored research project and annual quality improvement projects before graduation. Faculty are currently involved in research activities such as CBD, epilepsy, neonatal neurological problems, sleep disorders and pediatric brain tumors.
Six full-time faculty train residents in child neurology at SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, a renowned 190-bed tertiary care center. This program qualifies a physician for certification in neurology with special competence in child neurology.
