Study the Arts Abroad

Undergraduates in the Department of Visual and Performing Arts are strongly encouraged to study and/or travel abroad.

Living in another country provides opportunities for students to expand their world view. Firsthand exposure to the cultures of another country allows students to grow in ways that enhance their personal, intellectual, social, and artistic growth.

Where can I study abroad?

The most popular study abroad option for SLU arts students is at , Spain, where students can seamlessly continue their studies in all areas of our arts programs as well as in other disciplines. They can visit the Prado Museum with their art history classes, study flamenco music and dance with international experts, and explore theatre with a global perspective of the diverse student body there. Additional popular study abroad opportunities are in the United Kingdom, France, Italy, and Austria, although students are encouraged to seek programs in any location relevant to their interests.

When should I plan to study abroad?

Most students attend for a semester in their sophomore or junior year, although options for summer and other years are available as well. Making such decisions involves conversations with your college advisor and your major mentor to make sure that you are able to schedule all of the courses needed for any major or minor and the core curriculum.

How can I find out more about studying abroad?

The Office of International Services has a robust Study Abroad website to allow students to explore the many options available for over 50 approved SLU programs around the world. Students are encouraged to think ahead, planning pertinent advanced language study and consulting with their advisors in their college and their mentors in the department, to plan out their courses and applications to allow for this special opportunity.
