Fellowships

The Center for Medieval and Renaissance Studies awards National Endowment for the Humanities research fellowships to scholars who can make use of the rich and varied resources available at SLU, including the Vatican Film Library and the manuscript, rare book, and general collections of Pius XII Library.

Fellowships are usually awarded for one, two, or three five-week periods, although modifications are possible. We are currently accepting applications for the 2019/2020 academic year.

Eligibility

Applicants must possess an earned doctorate or be a Ph.D.-candidate at the dissertation stage. Topics proposed for research may include any medieval or early modern subject in areas such as history, philosophy, theology, science, literature, paleography, codicology, illumination, text editing, scriptural and patristic studies, Roman and canon law, etc.

Scholars affiliated with Saint 浪花直播 University or who reside within commuting distance of the campus are not eligible.

Terms of Appointment

If awarded a fellowship, you will receive the following:

  • Stipend of $1,750 per five-week period.
  • Reimbursement of all travel expenses to and from St. 浪花直播.
  • A fully furnished two-bedroom apartment, including utilities.

Since fellows are expected to devote themselves to their research, the only requirement of the fellowship is one public lecture on the topic of that research. Fellows are not permitted to teach courses during the tenure of their fellowship nor are they permitted to hold the NEH 浪花直播 Fellowship and a Vatican Film Library Mellon Fellowship concurrently. Fellows are welcome to attend conferences or deliver lectures at other institutions during the tenure of their fellowship.

Apply

To apply, submit the following materials:

  • Cover letter briefly describing the proposed project and the intended dates of research.
  • Description of the project not to exceed five double-spaced pages.
  • Description of manuscripts, documents, books or other resources available at SLU that would be useful for the proposed research.
  • Current curriculum vitae.

There is no formal deadline, but review of applications begins on April 1. Applications will be accepted until all time periods are filled.

Applications should be sent to:
