Education

Dana McWay received a Bachelor of Science, magna cum laude, from Saint 浪花直播 University and received her law degree, cum laude, Order of the Woolsack, from Saint 浪花直播 University, where she served as the Health Law Editor of the Saint 浪花直播 University Law Journal and as a Faculty 浪花直播 Fellow. 

After law school, she clerked for the Honorable Myron H. Bright, U.S. Senior Circuit Judge, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.

Practice Areas

Ms. McWay serves as the Clerk of Court for the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, responsible for all non-judicial functions of the Court. She has served on numerous national committees for the federal judicial branch, focused mainly on operational, financial, and information technology issues.

She received the Director's Award for Court Operations - Mission Requirements in 2016 and the Director's Award for Outstanding Leadership to the Judiciary in 2010. She previously served as Chief Deputy Clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. In private practice, she focused on health care, corporate/securities, and bankruptcy matters.

Her health law experience included Medicare issues, patient care confidentiality concerns, and the structuring of health care institutions. Before law school, she served as a health information administrator at several healthcare institutions. She currently serves as a guest lecturer at undergraduate health informatics and information management programs and has served as adjunct faculty at multiple master's programs in health informatics.

Publications and Media Placements

Ms. McWay's publications focus primarily on the interplay between health information management, law, and ethics. She is the author of Legal and Ethical Aspects of Health Information Management, now in its 5th edition and Today's Health Information Management, now in its 2nd edition, both published by Cengage Learning.

She is a co-author with Nanna Cross of Stanfield's Essentials of Medical Terminology, 5th ed. and Stanfield's Introduction to Health Professions, 7th ed., both published by Jones Bartlett Learning. She has co-authored published journal articles and a chapter on  Electronic Case Filing for the Missouri Bar's Bankruptcy Practice Deskbook.

Honors and Awards

Ms. McWay received the American Health Information Management Association's Triumph Award for the text Legal Aspects of Health Information Management; the Missouri Health Information Management Association's Distinguished Member and Outstanding Volunteer Awards; and the Alumni Award of Merit from Saint 浪花直播 University. She has received national recognition from the National Bar Foundation, a  component  of  the  American  Bar Association, for creating the 鈥淜ids in Court  Program,鈥 now operated by the Bar Association of Metropolitan St. 浪花直播, which was cited as one of the five most outstanding children鈥檚 legal education programs for 1995.

Community Work and Service

Ms. McWay is a former director of the Board of Directors of the American Health Information Management Association and has served as a voting member on the Institutional Review Board of Washington University School of Medicine since 1992. She currently serves on the advisory boards of two Health Information Management academic programs.
