Course Description

About The Power of Communication

In The Power of Communication, you will learn about yourself, you will learn about communication and its disorders, and you will learn about all the ways in which communication powerfully shapes our world and how we move through it together. The Power of Communication just might change your professional path!

Professor鈥檚 Perspective

Before becoming a professor, I was a practicing speech language pathologist. And I remain deeply committed to the work that I do for others. By developing The Power of Communication, I hoped to share my own passion for the field of Speech, Language and Hearing Science through a class that asks students to understand what happens when communication breaks down, and to develop creative strategies for restoring communication across boundaries.

Because communication plays a part in everything that we do, I want all of my students, whether from Business, Biology, Psychology, or Philosophy, to witness the importance of communication in their lives. I regularly invite students to apply class concepts to their own lives, asking, 鈥渉ow might this affect you as a marketing major? How might this affect you as a social work major?鈥 And the conversations we had in class really reinforced this cross-disciplinary communication. Students from different majors were talking to each other, sharing ideas and strategies with each other, engaging with one another. And for me as an instructor, I value this kind of communication above all.

For me, the Ignite seminar is an exciting opportunity to share my passion for the field of Speech, Language and Hearing Science with first-year students from across the University. My goal for this class is not to teach every student how to become a speech language pathologist. Instead, my goal is to light a flame."
