Textbook Options

Students taking lower division math courses have multiple purchase options when selecting their textbook.

MyMathLab courses

Students taking the following courses will need access to MyMathLab, an online homework and tutorial system, as well as a textbook:

  • MATH 0240: Introduction to Elementary Algebra I
  • MATH 0260: Intermediate Algebra
  • MATH 1200: College Algebra
  • MATH 1220: Finite Mathematics
  • MATH 1320: Survey of Calculus

There are several ways of getting textbooks:

  • A complete version of the textbook is available online as part of MyMathLab. If you choose this option, you will need to bring a wireless enabled laptop to class with you.
  • A new hard cover book with a MyMathLab access code shrink wrapped with the book.
  • A used hard cover book. In this case, you will need the access code separately.
  • A new loose leaf version of the book with MyMathLab shrink wrapped with the book. This is less expensive up front but resale options are limited.

Additionally, you may want the student solution manual.

Calculus

The text used for the following three courses is Calculus by Hughes-Hallet, McCallum, et. al and published by Wiley:

  • MATH 1510: Calculus I
  • MATH 1520: Calculus II
  • MATH 2530: Calculus III

Students who only plan to take MATH 1510: Calculus I and MATH 1520: Calculus II can buy a smaller, single variable version of the book.

Students who plan to take only Calculus III can get the smaller, multivariable portion of the book.

If students are planning to take all three semesters or Calculus II and III, they should get the larger single and multivariable version.

The publisher gives the option of getting the textbook in hardback, paperback and loose-leaf versions. Loose-leaf is the least expensive but resale options are limited.

Internship and Employment Options

Our graduates have entered careers in college and university teaching, business and industry at such places as Shell Oil, Defense Mapping Agency, Georgia-Pacific, General American Life, National Security Agency and Digital Equipment Corporation.

The primary location for finding job listings, both for full-time jobs and internships, is through SLU's office of Career Services. All current students and alumni should have access to their online Handshake system for a listing of current opportunities.
